How do I wash a tie dye t-shirt?

How do I wash a tie dye t-shirt? This is a question we get a lot and a question that I have heard a lot of different answers for. Made By Hippies tie dyes are all colorfast. That means the Procion dye we use has permanently bonded with the cotton strands and become a new color. Any excess dye is washed out using super hot water. Later the tie dye can be washed just the same as any other laundry using regular laundry soap. No special care is required.

The reason some tie dyers say to wash separately using only cold water is usually because they used Rit dye for their tie dyes. That dye does not bond with the cotton fabric, more just painting over the top and some gets washed away every time it goes through the wash. Using cold water keeps the dye from rinsing out but eventually most of the dye will wash out and the tie dye shirt will be faded and sad.

That's why our tie dyes are good, because they stay nice and bright wash after wash. Don't worry man, cause these tie dyes are made by hippies!

Made By Hippies 100th Tie Dye Sale on Etsy!

Yeah Mon! I&I just got our 100th sale on etsy today. I joined etsy on Jan 20th, 2009. So that's just about 5 months so I am pretty happy. I have been making and selling tie dyes since 2006. Thanks to my wife Amanda for teaching me after we first met! I have really been working hard on my website since last fall and it has shown from the hits. On my website www.madebyhippies.com.I went from about 250 hits a month last summer to around 4,000 a month this year. It's all with my just writing my website using html code in my good old notepad program.

But yeah I am happy I joined etsy and I am happy to have made it to 100 sales. I would say until I got to about sale #20 or so things were kind of sporadic but ever since oh about the end of April I have had almost an order a day, I love it!!! Sales on my regular website have been picking up as well.

Peace!

I&I am sick of the new internet

Yeah Mon! Just give me some notepad and good old HTML code. That I Overstand and Love. I have been making websites since 1999 and over the years have had a handful of sites that I worked on for years each and brought along the way from the early internet days to the new fangled internet junk of the year 2009.

I grew up in the NES generation. I was five when I got my Nintendo and loved it all my life. I always thought though that the kids who came after me would be even better at computers then me. Because I was good at them cause I grew up in the dawn of computers. From the first 286 computer we bought for like $2,000 when I was in the sixth grade to the various others along the years, the Pentium II, oh boy! But it seems in a way that for all the speed and performance that has been improved on (and of course the price of everything has dropped down) that what has suffered is the way people look at computers. They are no longer some cool thing that requires knowledge to use and understand but just a basic building block of life today. You can't even get a hamburger at McDonalds unless there are three computers involved in the process....

But what I am getting at is the new Internet just plain sucks. And what I mean by that is that the internet used to be a collection of websites that actual people made. There was some companies website or some tv shows website or a zillon billion fan sites for every topic around, Star Wars, Motorcyclces, Fraternity Life, whatever... But they all had a person behind them more or less... Then there was eBay back when you could actually find one of a kind things like at a garage sale.. now it seems like it's just stores selling stuff for a flat rate...

But what I am really getting at is that all these new Web 2.0 or Social Media websites are really dumbing down the internet and make people think that they are actually building a website or have a website of their own. But really you have no control over that crap... You uploaded your personal information to some central database of computers and gave them your email password so they could search your address book and find all your friends... index every human on the plant into a facebook profile... all data nicely lined up... but you are expressing yourself by choosing your own profile picture... and look your old college room mate that you didn't like then just invited you to join in on a mob raid with him... now that is bonding...

meanwhile there are all these websites that used to give people free websites, like angelfire or geocities or various others... you could make your own website from a blank slate and have it be any way you wanted... but you had to have a banner ad on the top, that sucked.. did it, how many banner ads are all over the websites now... and what the hell is with hotmail? everytime I go to check my email I have to look at ads of peoples big rolls of fat and trying to sell some diet pills... so don't tell me some crappy geocities top banner was crampin your style because internet ads have gotten out of hand now... well maybe those pop up ads that kept popping up two new ads for every one you closed, those did really suck...

but to prove me point here is the bottom line. if you make your own website and take a little time to actually learn a skill like writing some basic html code then you create it and it can be however you want. all those social sites are just full of crap and actual damage relationships with real friends more then anything... why ever write someone a real e-mail (much less a freakin letter) when you can just post it to their facebook wall...... but here is my case in point - so the last couple weeks I was trying to surf the wave and pull in some more hits for my tie dye website by promoting it on the social media websites. I was using the twitter to post updates about what I was working on tie dying and I had some feeds being posted there whenever I made a new blog post or posted an item on etsy. I was working on my twitter account for about a month and went from 3 followers to like 1300 in a few weeks... then bamn, twitter decided I was spamming people and suspended my account, bamn its gone. you don't own any of the content you work on to build on these social media websites, you think you own and account and have control, not so much. seriously I was not spamming people, I sent out like tops a dozen posts a day which if you have ever used the sites gets about 30 seconds of screen time I am sure... there are tons of scumbags trying to sell every pyramid scheme and adult program around on there and they boot the Swede for hustling some tie dyes?

Well screw twitter and facebook and all this shite.

I&I am rocking the web Oregon Gangsta style with a real website that I Erik typed all myself only using Notepad and html code.

So check it out at

Man, the traffic for Made By Hippies Dot Com has been increasing steadaly ever since August 2008 but this latest push has been very impreasive. The last couple of weeks traffic has surged to well over 100 visitors a day. About half the traffic is from website links and the other half is from search engines. I have been reciveing more and more orders too, so that is great!

Today I noticed some extra traffic being generated from the Yahoo search engine. It caught my eye because so far I have been getting most of my search engine traffic from google. So I checked it out and the results are awesome!!!

This is definitly my biggest search engine accomplishment to date. For the search term "Tie Dye For Sale" on yahoo my site www.madebyhippies.com ranks #1!!!

Lampworking has started in our studio!

We finally started our glass lampworking lessons this month and things are going well. It is a bit challenging at first just learning how to work and control the hot glass but we are learning quickly. We have begun to work on making some small pendants which are turning out really cool, even at these early stages.

So stay tuned for more, we will hopefully have some one of a kind glass pendents for sale on our etsy site soon.

My first number one Google search ranking!! For Camo Peace Sign!

I was checking some of the keywords used to find http://www.madebyhippies.com/ today and someone used Camo Peace Sign as a search term. So I checked it out on Google search and to my suprise and pleasure I found my website as the number one ranked site on google for the keyword "Camo Peace Sign" and then my other website http://www.howtotiedye.net/ as the number eight ranked website for the same search words. Man, my own hard work typing and typing html code and more pure html code is really paying off. It makes me happy!!!

Here is a screen shot I took. I have been working on the website a little too, cleaning up some of the copy and adding a bit to the menus, then I will propagate the changes through all the pages over the next few days.

A big photo shoot is in the works for the next week or so.... So stay tuned for lots more cool pictures to come!

Peace!!!

Tie Dye hustling at the Portland Gift Show

I&I will be at the Portland Gift show this Saturday - Thursday Jan 10-13, 2009 at the Convention Center. We have a booth on the Artisan's Alley and are going to try to find a few shop keepers interested in our tie dye clothing and score a couple wholesale orders. This is our first time at anything like this, a non-retail event so we are excited to give it a try. The website if you want to check it out is: http://portlandgift.com.

No real website updates lately. We designed an awesome tri-fold Made By Hippies brochure last night and we are working hard making tie dyes and getting ready for this weekends show.

No more snow in Portland now, but it was crazy for a while.

Peace!
